Reading to Learn

We are the Kawakawa reading group in room 8.
We have been reading a book that is all about getting to know more about plants as we have a garden and are currently getting ready to plant veggies.

Our purpose in reading this book was to learn about how we can help our plants to have a great start and continue to grow.

We are 'Reading to Learn'

What we know:
Plants…

> Need sun and water
> Produce Veggies
> Produce Fruits
> Through photosynthesis, a plant needs to gather light to create oxygen
> Seed roots/stalks go towards the light
>Some plants are poisonous
>They provide us with oxygen.
>Some do not need to be watered regularly.
> Provide us with food, wood, paper and oxygen for humans to survive.
> Can be dangerous if you touch them when you don’t know the information about it, for example poison ivy.
> Grow in soil.
> Can provide different types of Vitamins depending on what fruit / vegetable / herb you consume
> Provide animal habitats
>There are around 422,000
> Can fall asleep when given common sleeping gas
> Has the ability to create Co2  to O called “Photosynthesis”
> Can Be Toxic - poisonous

Key information we collected in our reading that added to our understanding

>Plants absorb energy from the sun and absorb nutrients from the soil.
>Miniature trunks also provide strength and carry water and nutrients.
> Plants give electrical signals when injured, burned or cut
> Can Be Carnivorous
> Water is transported through vessels in the stem called “xylem
> Water is absorbed through plant tissue
> Water secrets water from its leaves
> Plants provide us with food such as sweet fruits, vegetables and some, nuts.
> Every section of a plant has its own job to do. This helps the plant grow.
> Roots hold plants stable and capture the water
> The stem provides strength to help carry the water
> Algae is a plant that don’t have true stems or leaves.
> Need plants to make oxygen photosynthesis
> All plants generally they have the same parts
> Leaves absorb sunlight energy to make food.
