Walht: combine close reading and inference skills to analyse text to learn more about the qualities of people known as heroes or leaders.

Our Hero George -By Siu George the Jack Russell followed the children to the shops and two Pit bulls came and tried to attack the young boy. George barked at them to give a warning. Unfortunately George got bitten badly and had to be put down. He was a hero. George raced up to the Pit Bull dogs, barking to get their attention. This gave them children time to get away. This action showed that he was courageous and determined to protect the children. George was a kind pet, who believed in helping others, this also showed that he cared about them. As a small Jack Russell terrier, he was an athletic dog and this meant he was very fit and fast. He used these skills with confidence. A statue of George stands in the middle of his town known as Manaia in Taranaki. He wears three medals awarded to him for his bravery.

Kiwikids News - Reflection on the new techology of television in the near future

LG ROLL ABLE DISPLAY

As part of our reading programme, we work independently exploring new items that have a national or international setting.

LG has predicted that they will have bendable tv displays by 2017. It is so thin that you can match it with paper and it will be almost the same size. The technology on this device is so hi tech it can be rolled to a 3cm diameter roll. Later on 2017 LG will be making larger displays, and will improve on the technology of this TV. These TV will change the future it is possible that you could watch in any angle. I think this is a great idea, but the price might be out of everyone's budget.

George the hero - Thinking critically by Kevin

In reading this article I have been learning to combine close  reading and inference skills to analyse text to learn more about the qualities of people known as heroes or leaders.

In this article  George was a hero.
George was a Jack Russell dog who saved five children who were attacked by two Pit-Bulls. The dogs initially targeted the smallest child of the group. George moved the Pit Bulls focus from the child to him.  George risked his life, unfortunately George was bitten so badly, that he had to be put down.

______________________________________________________________________________

George’s action showed that he was a  loving, determined, and protective dog.  In comparison to the thick build of the Pit Bulls, George was a small dog, but very athletic that meant he was very fast and strong. George knew that thinking and protecting the children was a good thing, rather than just thinking of himself. The act of George showed that he was a fearless dog even against larger dogs. His actions were also evidence that he was courageous and confident. For the bravery and remembrance of George, he was awarded several medals of bravery and a statue of him was sculpted and stands in the town of Manaia in Taranaki.

Kathleen Hall - by Ingrid

Kathleen Hall

In reading this article I have been learning to combine close  reading and inference skills to analyse text to learn more about the qualities of people known as heroes or leaders.

Kathleen Hall was a New Zealand missionary nurse. Her missionary work started in Peking (which is now Beijing) and other large Chinese cities. Yet she knew the people without hospitals in the countryside were the ones that needed the most help. She gained permission to settle into the Hebi mountains near those kind of villages. Kathleen Hall was known as the “barefoot doctor”, because of the way she would walk to the nearby villages to visit and care for the sick.
Kathleen used her neutral citizenship to acquire medical equipment for the Chinese army. At that time it was the most dangerous mission of all. Before being sent back to New Zealand after being caught by the Japanese army, she boarded another ship and joined the Chinese Red Cross.
Miss. Hall believed in helping those in need.  Kathleen believed that even in war people should have the privilege to use medicine. She thought that people lacking medical help are the ones that need most attention. She detested war and the thought of taking sides. This wasn’t  just because she was a missionary.
She was a courageous and brave person. Kathleen showed this in the way she use neutral citizenship to help the Chinese. She was a compassionate person in the way she help and cared for the people in China. She showed perseverance  in the way she kept trying to help the people in need. Kathleen showed this in the way she was a missionary nurse, barefoot doctor, and provided the Chinese army with medical supplies.
Kathleen Hall was someone that put the needs of others in front of her own. She helped people as much as she could. Kathleen didn’t think about what’s in it for them but what more can she do for them. She put their own personal safety in risk to help others.
Kathleen Hall was more than a New Zealand missionary nurse, she was a hero. That’s why there's a marble statue of her in Song Family Village in China.

Dragon - a narrative by Ingrid

The Dragon

The Dragon
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there was a kingdom called Aotearoa but there was a dragon. Aotearoa was ruled by a fair and noble king called King George the 3rd. George was born royal by King George the 2nd and Queen Bella. George's wife Eve had a baby boy named Mark but, unfortunately, she died a couple of days after Mark's birth. Because of her death, George gave his son to his brother Henry, he had his own kingdom far, far from Aotearoa, to raise him as a knight.
The dragon, it was the size of a castle and had a fire hot as lava. The nasty and very hungry dragon lived in a cave not far. Anyone that dared to take one step in his cave was instantly eaten in one bite. He stayed there only because long an ago he once terrorized the people but King George stopped him if the villagers would give part of their stock to feed him. But because of the lack of rain, there was hardly any crop. So they stopped feeding him.
One random day something dreadful happened. "Rrroooaaaarrrr" the dragon flew out of his cave into the clouds landing on the castle, destroying more than half of it. Once on his feet, he stomped on the remaining towers. From the rubble, King George appeared yelling "You will not take my kingdom monster!" And in one bite King George was gone. Darkness covered the land and dark clouds covered the sky. Despair, grief, and fear was in the air. While the dragon picked out George's crown from his teeth.
News of the King’s death spread. Very soon the news of George's death spread to other kingdoms like his brother's. To avenge his brother's death he sent his best knight, Mark (George's son that Henry raises). "Mark, go to my brother's kingdom Aotearoa and slay the dragon and bring me back his head!" Henry ordered.
Mark responded, "Yes your majesty." Mark rode off on his horse followed by a cloud of dust. For days and nights, he rode closer and closer to his destination not knowing it was actually his father's kingdom.
Slowly entering the once amazing and vast green lands of Aotearoa, but now a dark and abandoned field. Houses turned to ash, markets into charcoal and fields filled with crop now an empty field of dirt.  "Now where is that overgrown lizard." Boom, the burnt market stands still standing fell to the ground. The ground shook anything, not crushed fell to the ground. Rrroooaaarrr, fire shot straight at Mark. "I guess he doesn't like visitors" Mark yelled hiding behind a market stand.
Mark ran from behind one stand to another making his way to the dragon. Just a couple meters from the dragon, with his sword in his hands, he ran towards the beast pointing at the dragon's neck. The dragon's tall scaly neck. Seconds later Mark's sword ripped through the dragon's neck. Splat the head fell to the ground with liters of slimy and gooey blood dripping from the cut.
Mark wrapped the dragon's decapitated head and took with him back to Henry's kingdom. A feast was thrown in honor of Mark with the beast's head hanging over the banquet table. Over the following years, Henry and Mark returned Aotearoa to it's vast and lush green lands. The darkness and clouds disappeared and Henry ruled both  and his own kingdom.

Over the next fifty years, he continued to be an inspiration, by being the founder of the Himalayan Trust after going to a tribe in the Himalayas and hearing “our children have eyes but can’t see. What we need is a school.” Within thirty years the Himalayan trust had built schools, hospitals, clinics, an airfield and several bridges. More than a Mountaineer = Isaac

More than a Mountaineer
:
In reading this article I have been learning to combine close  reading and inference skills to analyse text to learn more about the qualities of people known as heroes or leaders.

Sir Edmund Hillary was a man with determination and was most definitely a high achiever. As you should already know he was the first person to ever reach the top of Mount Everest with his companion Tenzing Norgay. Edmund Hillary has his face on the New Zealand 5 dollar note and was knighted by the Queen for his bravery and achievement.

He was an advocate for the people including the children of Nepal. This was shown when he spoke out to inform and encourage people around the world to help financially to build  schools,  hospitals, clinics, an airfield and bridges, to improve the standard of living for the people.  He founded the Himalayan Trust which became a charity foundation to help support the needs of the people.  He can be described as an  inspiration.

He believed in helping those in need. He used his fame to get financial support for the needs he had seen for the people of Nepal. He believed his idea of: creating the Himalayan Trust would last a long time and would continue on helping people in the near and far future.

Although famous worldwide, he remained a humble man, who encouraged others to reach out and help when and where they could.

Ko te Ratu 2 O te Hui-tanguru tenei ra - Tuesday 2 February 2016

As part of our reading program we use Kiwi Kids news to learn more about what is happening nationally and internationally in the world.

Walht: Think critically about what we read

1. Find a quote from the main person in this news article?
‘Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have found evidence in the outer solar system of an object that could be a real ninth planet. They have given it the nickname ‘Planet Nine’ or ‘Planet X’. There was no main person from this article only Researches .

In this article it explains that Scientist’s from a Institute of technology  in California have found a NEW! planet that is circulating or orbiting our solar system. They have decided to name this nineth  ‘Planet 9 or ‘Planet X’. They have also found out that it is 10 times the size of Earth and it takes 10,000 or 20,000 YEAR’S! for the planet to fully circulate the Sun. However, there’s a twist, they haven’t actually seen the planet, they have only found evidence of gravitation drag which means that a planet must be there.

Adventure park.
January 30th- Wednesday
Two cars.
To explore different places around Melbourne.
To have fun at adventure park.

On Wednesday the 30th of January, my family and I decided to explore new places.  We all thought of  ‘Adventure Park’,  it’s a  water park, plus a cool  normal park too.

Once I was ready and packed,  my aunt dropped me off  to my cousins house ,so that I could with them to Adventure Park. When the car was packed, we decided on a game to play while we were driving but in the end, we instead told riddles and jokes to each other. We stopped to get some food at a dairy next to the theme park.

After a while, I got so excited, I was like a  hyper monkey!  While we were standing in the line I was embarrassing myself by dancing and singing out loud. When we entered the gate I saw lots of rides and slides that looked amazing. We first looked for a spot, however it was hard because all the tables were occupied,  sadly for us we had to sit under a tree.

The first ride we took was the biggest slide called, ‘Gold rush’. It was so steep, right from the very beginning,  that I thought was going to fall before the light turned green.   Ring, the green light went!. I shut my eyes tightly and clung to the mat!  The ride was so bumpy I was flying across the slide.

Next, it was time for the water park.  There were buckets filled with water that fell on you and splashed all around. There was also small slides for kids and a pirate ship up stairs.

After a few more rides, we were all exhausted from walking around. We decided to eat some cupcakes and chips. After we eaten,  we decided to go on one last ride, which was known as the ‘Cyclone’. This ride had twirls and buckets. However, when I went on with my cousin Ravaughn she was at first, so scared. The combined weight o the two boosted our speed and we swirled around into this big hole down to smaller slides and finally  into a big pool which was too deep for us.

Fortunately the life guards were there to help us!   Today was exhausting and awesome at the same time.

The Kidnapped Child! by Launoa

The Kidnapped Child

One day in 2013, there was a little girl who lived in Australia. She lived  with her parents in a flat house near an old, old house.

One evening, the parents decided to travel overseas to Las Vegas but the little girl did not agree to it because she loved the flat house that they were staying in.Unfortunately for her, being only 8 years old, she had no choice but to go with them. She was far too young to be left alone with a friend.

They packed all their clothes in  bags and they were loaded into the plane. While on the plane they talked and discussed where they were going to stay for 40 days. The little girl wanted to live in a hotel that was near the city and surprisingly, her parents agreed to it.

Once they hopped out of the plane, they caught a cab and told the driver to take them to a hotel near the city. The cab driver asked, “What is the child’s name?”
The little girl’s father said, “It’s Ria!”
The driver looked at the little girl and said, “Hello!” But the little girl did not say a thing at all. She was a quiet girl.  Moments later, the girl looked at the mirror and at that exact minute, she saw the man was making an evil face at her.

Finally they arrived at the hotel and the father took a picture of the plate number and the number of the cab that the driver was driving, (thinking that if they needed a taxi  again, he could get the same man). They walked into the hotel and saw a women sitting at the reception. They asked the woman, “Do you have an available room for us to stay for 40 days?”
She said, “You guys are the most luckiest family because there is only one room available..  It is  on floor 6 number 187 , There are two beds in the room.’.
They replied, “Thank you very much for help!” The driver didn’t go till then, he listened to everything that they said... even what room and floor they were on.

A few days later, around 3:00am, the cab driver, entered the hotel and went into their room and dragged the little girl out of the bed, into the bathroom and taped her mouth before she could scream. Slowly he walked her out and threw her into the cab without anyone noticing.

The clock hit 8:00am and the parents were finally awake. They saw the little girl’s bed, it was empty. They looked everywhere in the hotel, in the bathroom, closet and  asked the same lady who was at the reception. Sofia, who was the security for the cameras in the hotel, checked to see if there was any sign of what may have happened to the little girl.  They checked all the hotel rooms. They had one more camera left to check and that was the one that showed the main entry of the hotel.  Shock noises escaped from the mouths of the little girl’s parents throats when they saw Ria and the taxi driver behind her pushing her inside the same cab that had brought them earlier.

The parents were hysterical, desperately trying to work out what to do next. The father suddenly remembered taking a photo of the number plate and the phone number of the cab. They drove down to the boss of the cabs in Alvindale.  “Have you seen a man with blonde hair?” the father asked.
The man he was addressing replied, “ He has taken a passenger to the other side of Las Vegas.  They asked the boss if he knew the street and the boss said, “Allidon Street.” Driving as quickly as possible, they followed the directions they had been given to get there.

They recognised the cab when they arrived because it had the same number plate. They Both the father and the mother ran, each of them had a AK47  to protect themselves. The door was open and inside sat Ria tied up. The taxi driver did not know that the parents could see him and was just about to shoot poor little Ria in the head!

While the little girl’s mother, watched  in fear, her husband ran in to save his child’s life.  The taxi driver was so shocked that he froze for a minute and that is when the father hit him in the chest with the butt of his gun and he died.

Taking the tape off the Ria’s mouth, they untied the ropes and released her. They  grabbed her safely, kissed and hugged her and took her safely home.
