Grey Angels Summary
Thousands of nurses helped injured soldiers during the war. Many nurses wanted to help the soldiers at war and the key way they could do this was through active service, using their nursing skills to help the wounded.
The Western front was filled with wounded men. They (the nurses) had to work in what is described as punishing, due to the intense temperatures / heat they had to work in for the whole day.
Small barges were used to ferry wounded men backward and forward to Hospital ships.. The nurses also had to work in these same conditions. Most of the soldiers came from the battlefield. Nurses also traveled to different countries around the world where there was war. There were more than 47,000 patients. Two thousand men were killed before getting to the hospital. A lot of them had no graves that were known. Some people struggled. Many patients had to have limbs amputated as a result of their injuries.
